Activities for any Weather and Mobility Level

It’s getting cold outside, but the weather doesn’t have to slow you down. Even as we start to see our traditional rainfall here in the PNW that doesn’t mean that we can’t stay active. We have put together a list of activities fun for all ages and mobility levels that don’t depend on the weather. If you are looking for ways to stay active or reasons to get out of the house, we’ve got you covered. Check out our senior friendly activities that are fit for any weather.

  1. Go Swimming– It may seem counterintuitive this time of year, but most people have a large hotel, gym, or recreation center nearby with an indoor heated pool. Water aerobics or other forms of water exercise are a great way to stay fit and increase fitness levels with very low impact and minimal risk to your body.
  2. Grow Plants- Even in the wintertime plants can be healthy and strong when left indoors and near a window that gets plenty of sunlight. You won’t be starting a garden, but you can have some fun while staying warm and dry indoors.
  3. Dust off Your Favorite Board Games– If you are going to be indoors why not take out the board games at the back of the closet and have some fun. Monopoly, Pictionary, and Balderdash are just a few we would recommend.
  4. Traveling- It’s a great way to spend your time and experience new things. Plus, you can always go somewhere with less rain than here (which shouldn’t be hard). The Bahama’s, Spain, Costa Rica, and Hawaii are just a few great choices. If you want to stay closer to home you can always go to California, it’s a short flight and a great road trip.

As Seniors who are aging in place continue to, well age, it is important to remember to move. Aging in place does not mean never moving or getting out of the house. It is especially important as we age to keep our bodies active.

Being active doesn’t mean you have to go to the gym or lift weights, it can be as simple as going for a short walk once a day. Activity requires consistency and what is important is maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating healthy, exercising regularly, and getting plenty of sleep.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun or eat the thing you want. You just have to be doing the right thing the majority of the time. It is ok to sit on the couch, watch tv, and eat junk food sometimes, just make sure you don’t do it every night.

We should all be living active and healthy lifestyles and we hope these suggestions motivate you to live a little healthier!
